Chappel wins boys Newton XC title; Sosa among top in girls division

Devin Chappel continued his strong 2020 fall cross country performances on Saturday, Oct. 3, when he captured the upper-class boys division title of the Newton Invitational.

Chappel covered the 5-kilometer layout in a time of 16:52.16 to win by 12 seconds over Cody Achilles of McPherson (17:04.62). Brody Hoff finished a strong fifth with a time of 18:14.31 but those were the only two high finishes for the Buffalo boys.

The Buffs’ boys team finished fifth out of six teams with 93 points while Wamego captured the team crown with 48 points. Dodge City (55), Derby (76) and Campus (86) finished ahead of the Buffs. Liberal was sixth at 145.

Other finishers for the Buffs were Kenji Craig in 25th (18:23.11), Evan Gurrola in 32nd (18:40.83), Isaiah Casados in 38th (19:21.85) and Hayden Bailey in 45th (20:01.55). Joel Contreras did not finish the race.

On the girls side, sophomore Jocelyn Sosa led the way for the Lady Buffs, placing fifth with a time of 20:48.81. Dodge City’s Serenity Larson garnered first with a time of 20:00.82.

Dodge City’s girls won the team title with just 22 points with individual finishes of first, second, fourth, ninth, 10th and 11th. Andrea Hernandez was next for the Lady Buffs in 15th with a time of 22:36.65. Selah Hageman placed 21st in 23:27.82 and Lana Rodriguez in 31st at 24:16.73. Abigail Aguilar rounded out the team in 38th at 24:52.52.

Next up for the cross country teams will be the El Dorado Invitational on Saturday with races set to begin at 9 a.m.
