The 2020 football season remains a struggle for the Garden City Buffaloes after Friday night’s road loss to a talented Wichita-Kapaun Mt. Carmel football team.
The loss, a 56-0 decision in which a running clock was employed for the fourth quarter, was the first time since 2007, a period covering 121 games, in which the Buffaloes offense did not score.
Friday’s setback left the Buffs with a 1-5 season record and they will play two home games to finish out the 8-game regular season. They take on Ulysses’ Tigers on Oct. 16 and Great Bend on Oct. 23, both at Buffalo Stadium with 7 p.m. kickoffs.
Kapaun scored 21 points in the opening period and added 14 in the second to take command at 35-0 at halftime. Another 14 points were tacked on in the third stanza and the Crusaders added one more in the fourth period.
Despite not putting any points on the board, the Buffs’ offense did show signs of improvement with 223 total yards (118 passing, 105 rushing). Four turnovers, however (3 fumbles and 1 interception) prevented the Buffs from getting any consistency in moving the ball into scoring position.
Defensively, Kapaun rolled up 456 total yards (105 passing, 351 rushing) yet only had possession of the ball for a little more than a minute than the Buffs. Kapaun didn’t have any turnovers, marking two weeks in a row that the defense has not forced a miscue.
Sophomore quarterback Caleb Wiese completed 8-of-14 passes for 118 yards and 1 interception. Josh Janas topped the receivers with 6 catches for 101 yards.
