Buffs’ soccer struggles again on offense in loss at Wichita Trinity

BOYS SOCCER: Thursday, Oct. 15, 2020

Tuesday’s road trip to Wichita proved to be a tough return ride home for the Garden City Buffaloes’ boys soccer team.

The Buffs, who have struggled to score lately, fell 3-0 to Wichita Trinity to fall to 6-7-0 overall. They return to Wichita on Thursday, Oct. 15, to face Wichita-Bishop Carroll in a 5:30 p.m. pitch at Carroll High School.

Garden City trailed 1-0 at halftime following Trinity’s first goal in the 25th minute. Two more Trinity goals in the final half sealed the fate of the Buffs. Trinity scored on a penalty kick in the 50th minute and closed out the scoring with a kick from just outside the penalty box in the 58th minute.

“Two difficult goals in the second half and otherwise it’s a 1-0 game and we’re in it,” said first-year coach Jose Vital. “The boys are playing hard, we just need to find a way to score.”

The Buffs had 7 shots on goal to 5 for Trinity. GCHS keepers Angel Guevara and Daniel Zamaripa had two saves each. The shutout was the fourth consecutive setback for the Buffs.

Trinity improved its record to 7-5-1 while the upcoming match with Carroll sees the host team evened at 6-6-0.

This will be the final regular-season match for the Buffs until regionals begin the week of Oct. 26. Semifinal games will be played either Oct. 26 or 27 with the regional title match set for Oct. 29. Due to COVID-19 considerations, teams this fall have been placed into a four-team bracket and will be seeded by regular-season records.

The Buffs are in the same regional as Dodge City (12-0), Liberal (7-2) and Hutchinson (5-8). The No. 1 and 4 seeds will play in one semifinal while the No. 2 and 3 seeds match up in the other. State 6A quarterfinal games will be played Nov. 3 with the state semis, championship and consolation games scheduled for Nov. 6 and 7.
