Buffs’ defense struggles early, offense stymied in Homecoming loss to Hays

After winning a dramatic 14-8 decision over rival Dodge City on the road on Sept. 18, the Garden City Buffaloes football team was looking to build on that momentum when it played host to the unbeaten Hays High Indians on Friday, Sept. 25, at Buffalo Stadium.

It was Homecoming and the final home game before going on the road for two weeks in early October.

Hays, though, started strong against the Buffs' defense and the hosts could not recover as the visiting Indians prevailed 28-7. The loss dropped the Buffs to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the Western Athletic Conference while Hays improved to 4-0 and 2-0.

Lady Buffs tennis capture GC Invitational title

The Garden City Lady Buffaloes tennis team had a strong overall showing on Saturday, Sept. 26, by winning their own invitational at the GCHS Tennis Complex.

The Lady Buffs, under the guidance of new head coach Logan Bevis, finished with 81 points to outlast Colby, which was second with 74 points. Dodge City placed third with 62 points while Scott City (60) and Great Bend (56) rounded out the top five teams in the 10-team field.

Lady Buffs’ volleyball goes 2-1 at Ulysses quad; WAC streak ends

Garden City High School's girls volleyball went 2-1 on Thursday at the Ulysses Quadrangular, beating non-league opponents Pratt and Ulysses, but coming up short in a 3-set heartbreaker loss to Western Athletic Conference foe Hays High.

The Lady Buffs, seeing their record now at 5-6, defeated Pratt 25-21, 25-21 and then toppled host Ulysses 25-18, 25-22. In their final match of the night, the Lady Buffs opened the first set against Hays with a 25-14 win only to see the Lady Indians rally with set wins of 20-25 and 28-30 to drop the Buffs.

Buffs’ boys XC team nudges Dodge in Hays meet; Sosa tops girls effort

With all five runners placing in the top 15, the Garden City Buffaloes' boys cross country team edged rival Dodge City for the Hays Invitational title which was run over the Sand Plum layout outside Victoria, Kansas.

The Buffaloes finished with 44 points to slip past Dodge City's 46 points, which countered Dodge City's one-point win two weeks ago at Great Bend.

Buffs’ soccer comes up 1-goal short in loss at Liberal

Garden City High School's boys soccer team hit the road Thursday for a Western Athletic Conference match-up with Liberal's Redskins only to return home after suffering a tough, 4-3, setback to the home team.

The Buffs saw their season record slip to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the WAC. They were coming off a 10-0 victory on Tuesday at home against TMP-Hays. The Buffs will return to WAC action on Tuesday, Sept. 22, with a match at rival Dodge City with a scheduled pitch for 5 p.m.

GCHS girls tennis blitzes field at Dodge City Invitational, winning 3 of 4 divisions

Garden City High School's girls tennis team continued its stellar play in the first week of competition by claiming its second straight team title on Tuesday at the Dodge City Invitational.

Following on the heels of its win on Saturday, Sept. 12 in Great Bend, the Lady Buffs scored 29 points, capturing the No. 1 and 2 singles titles along with the No. 2 doubles crown. The only non-winner was the No. 1 doubles team that finished third, losing just one match.

Buffs come up short in tough loss to Hutchinson

Often times, victories or losses take on more or less significance.

Friday, in the home opener and also Senior Night at Buffalo Stadium, the 21-20 loss to Hutchinson's Salthawks became one of those tougher moments for the Garden City Buffaloes.

Buffs’ boys soccer advances to semis of Goddard Tournament

A one-day postponement did little to dampen the spirits of the Garden City Buffaloes' boys soccer team as they produced a thrilling 3-2 victory over Rose Hill Wednesday in the opening round of the Goddard Tournament at the Goddard Stadium.

Wednesday's victory sends the Buffs into Thursday's semifinal, scheduled for 6 p.m., against the winner of the late Wednesday game between Goddard and Buhler.

Buffs come up just short against No. 4 Manhattan in 2020 football opener

All along in the preseason, Garden City High School football coach Brian Hill had put special emphasis on an improved offense and playing better defense after going through a pair of 2-7 seasons in 2018 and 2019.

In Friday night’s season opener, on the road against No. 4-ranked Class 6A Manhattan, Hill got a portion of that emphasis.

But it wasn’t enough to overcome as the Buffaloes left Manhattan after absorbing a 21-7 setback to the Indians in a game that was just one touchdown apart with 33 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

Lady Buffs second at Hugoton 9-hole invite

Garden City High School's girls golf team played its second tournament of the season in just four days on Thursday, Sept. 3, placing second among seven teams at the Hugoton Invitational.

The 9-hole event was contested at the Forewinds Municipal Golf Course, with the Lady Buffs shooting a 4-player score of 208 to finish behind the Colby winning score of 193.
