Warren’s top 20 finish highlights youthful Lady Buffs state golf experience

The youthful Garden City High School girls golf team gained valuable experience at the Class 6A state tournament on Monday and Tuesday which was contested at the Hesston Golf Course.

While the overall finish was not quite what head coach Trent Specht would have hoped for, the two-day, 36-hole tourney will provide much learned knowledge for a team that will lose just one senior.

When the 2020 volleyball season served up its first matches in early September, little did anyone know just how competitive the Western Athletic Conference would be between 9-time defending league champion Garden City, and improved teams from Hays, Great Bend, Dodge City and Liberal.

On Saturday, at Great Bend’s gymnasium, that overall balance and competitiveness could not have been more evident.

Riggs, Ptacek unable to advance at Class 6A state tennis tourney

The final goal for both Sage Riggs and Brooke Ptacek was to be playing on Saturday, Day 2, at the 2020 Class 6A state tennis tournament.

But that objective came up short for both of the Garden City High School Lady Buffs singles players as they each fell in their respective two matches on Friday at the Olathe-College Boulevard Activity Center.

Chappel, Hoff pace boys XC to runner-up WAC finish

It wasn't the final standings both team and individual that Garden City High School cross country coach Krista Linenberger had hoped for, but the Buffs' mentor was still pleased with the effort put forth by both teams at Thursday's Western Athletic Conference championship.

Running at Liberal's Yucca Ridge Golf Course layout, the Buffs' boys took second in the team chase with 50 points, while Dodge City captured the title with 40 points. Great Bend was third with 63. The boys were the defending league champs.

Buffs’ boys soccer ties Bishop Carroll in scoreless 2 OT marathon

The Garden City High School boys soccer team closed out its regular season schedule on Thursday with a road match at Wichita-Bishop Carroll.

And while the Buffs were unable to score a goal for the fifth straight game, they managed to escape with a 0-0 tie after two, 10-minute overtime periods failed to break the scoreless deadlock.

Buffs’ soccer struggles again on offense in loss at Wichita Trinity

Tuesday's road trip to Wichita proved to be a tough return ride home for the Garden City Buffaloes' boys soccer team.

The Buffs, who have struggled to score lately, fell 3-0 to Wichita Trinity to fall to 6-7-0 overall. They return to Wichita on Thursday, Oct. 15, to face Wichita-Bishop Carroll in a 5:30 p.m. pitch at Carroll High School.

Lady Buffs drop Liberal in volleyball; WAC tourney up next on Saturday

The past couple of weeks have not exactly been a picnic for the Garden City High School Lady Buffaloes volleyball team.

Some nagging injuries, some illnesses have forced head coach Trista Bailey to employ a multitude of starting lineups with a variety of rotations as well.

On Tuesday night, though, the makeshift lineups seemed to come together in one of their best performances of the season, capturing a best 3-of-5 set match against Western Athletic Conference foe Liberal in a four-set decision at The Garden.

During the fall 2020 girls golf season, Garden City sophomore Ryan Warren has been battling the best players from Hays High for top honors in the Western Athletic Conference.

Riggs, Ptacek advance to 6A state singles tennis tourney

Junior Sage Riggs and sophomore Brooke Ptacek will compete this weekend at the Class 6A state tennis tournament after qualifying during Saturday's regional tournament at Wichita North.

Riggs, who was seeded No. 1 in the singles division, placed second after falling in a nearly two-hour match to Hutchinson's Gracie Foster, a player she has split decisions with this season.

Ptacek, meanwhile, qualified in the third position after winning two matches before falling to the eventual champion in the semifinals. In her third-place match, Ptacek earned an injury default victory when Hutchinson's Emilee Railsback could not play due to injury.
