The second-ranked in Class 5A Wichita Northwest Grizzlies proved its ranking was accurate on Friday night vs. Garden City.
The undefeated Grizzlies ran for 443 yards in a 52-2 win over the Buffaloes on Friday. Garden City’s offense had trouble getting going against the tough Northwest defense, gaining 158 yards on 54 plays.
Northwest improved to 6-0 and Garden City dropped to 2-4. However, the Buffs are still unbeaten in the WAC at 2-0, and host rival Dodge City in the Hatchet Game.
Dodge City is 6-0 and coming off a 40-21 win over Hays.
Northwest jumped out to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter, getting the scoring started on Reagan Jones’ 15-yard scamper 5 minutes into the game. Jones, Northwest’s quarterback, finished with 182 yards and two scores on 15 carries.
Jamar Martin had 117 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries and Julius Bolden had 15 carries for 83 yards and a touchdown.
Northwest led 21-0 at halftime, but exploded for 24 points in the third quarter to blow the game open. The Buffs scored on a safety late in the fourth quarter.
Josh Janas had 69 yards on 17 carries and Erik Dominguez had 53 yards on 11 carries for the Buffs.
