Serrano, Janas top Buffs’ wrestlers at tough KC Stampede

Anjelina Serrano and Josh Janas were the top finishers for the Garden City Buffaloes wrestling teams on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 20-21, in the always-tough Kansas City Stampede. Serrano posted a 5-1 record to place third in the 130-pound division of the girls competition while Janas went 5-4 and took fourth at 152 pounds.

Garden City High School's girls and boys basketball teams grabbed a pair of road wins on Friday, Dec. 20, at Bear Creek, Colo. to conclude the 2019 portion of their schedule.

Buffs’ swimmers dominant again vs. WAC opponents

The first few weeks of the 2019-20 swimming season has been a big positive experience for the Garden City High School Buffaloes' boys team. That was evident once again on Thursday, Dec. 19, when the Buffs rolled to a convincing triangular meet victory over Western Athletic Conference opponents Great Bend and Dodge City at the Garden City Family YMCA Pool. The Buffs totaled 242 points in capturing eight first-place finishes among the 11 contested events and it was a sweet way to celebrate Senior Night as the Buffs honored five seniors for their contributions to the program -- Nate Morren, Austin Hess, Peter Hall, Santiago Nunez and Lane Durst.

Buffs’ JV swimmers solid at Hutch varsity meet

The depth of the Garden City High School boys swim team was evident on Tuesday when coach Brian Watkins took just six junior varsity swimmers to the Hutchinson Invitational, which was a varsity meet for all other competing teams. The Buffs did score 30 points, but Watkins said the value was in the experience provided to his JV swimmers to be able to compete against varsity swimmers.

Buffs’ wrestlers nab Ridge Rage in Colorado; girls shine at Great Bend

It proved to be a good day on Saturday, Dec. 14 for the Garden City High School boys and girls wrestling teams. The boys went 5-0 and dominated the Ridge Rage Duals at Palmer Ridge High School, Colo., while the Lady Buffs wrestlers had a strong outing at the 23-team Great Bend Invitational.

Buffs’ boys perfect in Roundball Classic; girls go 2-1

After a disappointing opening night on Dec. 10 in Guymon, Okla., the Garden City High School boys basketball team bounced back to go 3-0 in the 2019 Roundball Classic at The Garden. The Buffaloes, who are now 3-1 this season, started off the Classic with a 55-50 victory over previously unbeaten and Colorado state-ranked Palmer Ridge, Colo., on Thursday, Dec. 12. They followed it with a stirring 60-59 victory over Coronado, Colo., on Friday before finishing off the three-game sweep with a 54-42 triumph Saturday over Scott City's Beavers.

Garden City, Holcomb boys go 3-0 at Classic; Scott City girls perfect at Roundball

The three-day Clarion Inn Roundball Classic, hosted by Garden City, Holcomb and Scott City high schools, concluded on Saturday, Dec. 14, with six games played at The Garden on the campus of Garden City High School.

Buffs sweep again, this time vs. Coronado in Roundball Classic

The middle day of the three-day, three-town Clarion Inn Roundball Classic is in the books after Friday’s doubleheaders in Garden City, Holcomb and Scott City. In Garden City, the host Lady Buffs won their matchup with Coronado, Colo., 53-39, while the boys survived a 60-59 nail-biter in the nightcap. At Holcomb, Palmer Ridge, Colo. dropped the host Lady Longhorns, 48-35, while the boys used the hot-shooting of Jackson Stoppel (23 points) for a 79-68 triumph. Scott City, meanwhile, swept a twinbill on the Beavers’ home court with a 54-40 girls win over Wichita Trinity and then the boys concluded with a 60-40 victory over the visitors.

Following Tuesday's disappointing season-opening road trip to Guymon, Okla., which resulted in tough losses for both the Lady Buffs and the Buffs, the teams bounced back with strong performances in Thursday night's opening games of the 2019 Roundball Classic at The Garden.

Buffs’ boys swimmers dunk opposition at Great Bend

Make it 2-for-2 at the early outset of the 2019-20 swimming season for the Garden City High School Buffaloes boys team. The Buffs made it two straight team titles with a resounding 84-point triumph over host Great Bend (386-302) to capture the Panther Invitational on Tuesday. With all five Western Athletic Conference schools competing, the Buffs gave an early snapshot of what may occur later in the season when they defend their 2019 league title. Dodge City, Hays and Liberal were a distant third, fourth and fifth among the six-team field.
