Buffs sweep again, this time vs. Coronado in Roundball Classic

DAY 2 SUMMARY

The middle day of the three-day, three-town Clarion Inn Roundball Classic is in the books after Friday’s doubleheaders in Garden City, Holcomb and Scott City.

In Garden City, the host Lady Buffs won their matchup with Coronado, Colo., 53-39, while the boys survived a 60-59 nail-biter in the nightcap.

At Holcomb, Palmer Ridge, Colo. dropped the host Lady Longhorns, 48-35, while the boys used the hot-shooting of Jackson Stoppel (23 points) for a 79-68 triumph.

Scott City, meanwhile, swept a twinbill on the Beavers’ home court with a 54-40 girls win over Wichita Trinity and then the boys concluded with a 60-40 victory over the visitors.

Saturday’s final day of action will see all teams competing at The Garden in Garden City. The schedule will be as follows:

11 a.m.-Wichita Trinity girls vs. Palmer Ridge, Colo.; 12:45 p.m.-Trinity boys vs. Palmer Ridge; 2:30 p.m.-Holcomb girls vs. Coronado, Colo.; 4:15 p.m.-Garden City girls vs. Scott City; 6 p.m.-Holcomb boys vs. Coronado; 7:45 p.m.-Garden City boys vs. Scott City.

Day 2 – Friday’s Summaries

AT THE GARDEN/GARDEN CITY

GIRLS

Playing their third game in four days, the Garden City Lady Buffaloes used a strong first half effort to race past Coronado, Colo., 53-39, in Day 2 of the 2019 Roundball Classic at The Garden.

The victory improves the Lady Buffs’ record to 2-1 and sets up their final Classic game on Saturday at 4:15 p.m. against unbeaten and Class 3A state-ranked Scott City at The Garden. Scott City won its second game in two nights at home with a 54-40 win over Wichita Trinity.

The Lady Buffs opened up a 14-7 lead after one quarter and then used an 18-11 second-quarter outburst to take a 32-18 halftime lead. Coronado, which had lost to Scott City on Thursday, had a 15-12 third-quarter edge to make it 46-33 heading to the fourth quarter. Both teams struggled offensively in the final eight minutes, with the Buffs having a 7-6 edge.

Julie Calzonetti, with a trio of 3-pointers, finished with a game-high 17 points for the Lady Buffs. Seven other players scored for coach Matt Pfeifer’s squad.

BOYS

GARDEN CITY 60, CORONADO, COLO. 59

Azavier Williams hit a clutch bucket with just under five seconds remaining to lift the Garden City Buffaloes boys to a dramatic 60-59 victory as the Buffs withstood a furious Cougar rally in the fourth quarter Friday night at The Garden to conclude Day 2 of the Roundball Classic.

The Buffs, who had led 45-38 heading into the fourth quarter, survived a furious comeback by Coronado, who had rallied to take a 59-58 lead with 25 seconds remaining. But the Buffs worked for a final shot and it was the senior Williams who came through in the clutch with a driving shot.

The Buffs, who won for the second straight night, are now 2-1 and will face Scott City at 7:45 p.m. Saturday in the Roundball Classic finale at The Garden.

Tae Rosales led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points, Williams followed with 12 and Aaron Guevara chipped in with 11. In all, eight players notched the scoring column. Ladarius May had a game-high 22 points for Coronado, which fell to 1-4. William White and Brycen Scherr added 13 and 11 points, respectively.
