Following Tuesday’s disappointing season-opening road trip to Guymon, Okla., which resulted in tough losses for both the Lady Buffs and the Buffs, the teams bounced back with strong performances in Thursday night’s opening games of the 2019 Roundball Classic at The Garden.
The Lady Buffs got things off to a good start with a come-from-behind victory over Palmer Ridge, Colo., previously unbeaten in three games, with a 49-40 triumph after trailing 22-14 at halftime. The Lady Buffs then outscored the Lady Bears 21-8 and 14-10 in the final two quarters (35-18) to claim their first win of the season.
“I’m really proud of the girls for the way they fought back and played in the second half,” said head coach Matt Pfeifer. “We really showed some poise.”
The Buffs got a balanced scoring attack from Nateara Beasley and Julie Calzonetti with 12 points each and Symone Simmons with 11.

After struggling in their season opener just 48 hours before, the Buffaloes’ boys saw much improvement in most phases of the game, resulting in their 55-50 triumph over Palmer Ridge, Colo., Thursday night at The Garden.
The Buffs led 14-8 after one quarter and were up 26-22 at halftime before taking a 42-36 advantage into the final eight minutes. They never surrendered the lead in the closing quarter en route to win number one.
It was a balanced offense for the Buffs, with nine different players scoring at least four points, and Tae Rosales’ 10 points was the lone double-figure scorer. The victory came despite the Buffs hitting just 6 of 18 free throws.
“We were certainly better than we were on Tuesday,” head coach Jacy Holloway said, “but we still made too many mistakes, missed too many easy shots and were not good at the free throw line. So I know we can be a lot better in time.”

In other Day 1 matchups, with Holcomb and Scott City also playing home games, it was Holcomb’s boys rolling past Wichita Trinity, 57-31, while the Lady Longhorns fell to Trinity, 43-38.
Scott City’s state-ranked girls, meanwhile, breezed to a 65-41 triumph over Coronado, Colo., 65-41, only to have the Beavers’ boys come up short in a 71-67 shootout setback to the Coronado squad.
In Friday’s action, it will be Garden City’s girls and boys hosting Coronado at 6 and 8 p.m. in The Garden while Holcomb plays host to Palmer Ridge and Scott City entertains Wichita Trinity.
Saturday’s final day of action will see Trinity taking on Palmer Ridge in girls and boys games at 11 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Holcomb’s girls will then face Coronado at 2:30 p.m., followed by the Garden City-Scott City girls game at 4:15 p.m. In the evening closeout games, it will be Holcomb boys facing Coronado at 6 p.m. and Garden City’s boys meeting Scott City in the 7:45 p.m. finale. All games are at The Garden.
