Buffs’ wrestlers nab Ridge Rage in Colorado; girls shine at Great Bend

It proved to be a good day on Saturday, Dec. 14 for the Garden City High School boys and girls wrestling teams.

The boys went 5-0 and dominated the Ridge Rage Duals at Palmer Ridge High School, Colo., while the Lady Buffs wrestlers had a strong outing at the 23-team Great Bend Invitational.

At the Ridge Rage, the Buffs captured a 65-9 win over Fairview, Colo.; beat Mountain Vista, Colo., 65-18; dropped Silver Creek, Colo., 72-6; stopped The Classic Academy, 65-12, and then blanked Vista Ridge, 72-0.

In many of the matches, the Buffs won via forfeits, so in all the Buffs won 7 of 8 matches vs. Fairview; 10-1 against Mountain Vista; 9-0 against Silver Creek; 8-0 against The Classic Academy and 5-0 against Vista Ridge.

That left them with an overall match won-loss record of 39-2.

Next up for the Buffs will be the tough Kansas City Stampede, which gets under way on Friday and concludes Saturday. It is usually one of the most challenging tournaments of the season for coach Carlos Prieto’s squad.

The Lady Buffs, meanwhile, saw Anjelina Serrano capture the 130-pound gold medal to lead the way with a 5-0 record. Chloe Sullivan went 4-1 for a runner-up finish at 109 pounds. Esmerelda Corado posted a 4-1 mark to place second in the 116-pound division.

Serrano’s five victories were by fall. Alondra Guzman also posted a 3-1 mark for a second-place finish at 155 pounds. At 136 pounds, Bethanie Cruz went 3-2 and placed third.

In the 170-pound division, Khalista Rhoades went 2-3 and placed sixth. Camila Estevez-Perez went 2-2 at 235 pounds and took third.
