Serrano, Janas top Buffs’ wrestlers at tough KC Stampede

Anjelina Serrano and Josh Janas were the top finishers for the Garden City Buffaloes wrestling teams on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 20-21, in the always-tough Kansas City Stampede.

Serrano posted a 5-1 record to place third in the 130-pound division of the girls competition while Janas went 5-4 and took fourth at 152 pounds.

The boys team placed 32nd while the girls squad, in their first major outing, placed sixth our of more than 20 teams.

“Really proud of the way the girls wrestled,” head coach Carlos Prieto said. “They all competed well and are improving with each tournament. Josh really had a great tournament for one of the highest finishers we’ve had in some time.”

The boys were without 145-pound, two-time state champion Jacob Holt, who was nursing an injury suffered in Colorado the week before.

In all, the Buffs’ boys posted a 35-48 won-loss record.

Chloe Sullivan went 3-2 and took fourth at 103 pounds while two girls placed fifth – Esmerelda Corado at 115 pounds (4-2) and Camila Estevez (3-2) at 235 pounds. Overall, the girls posted a 25-17 won-loss match record.

The Buffs will be idle until Jan. 9, 2020, when they open defense of their Western Athletic Conference title with a road dual at rival Dodge City.
