Girls, boys basketball teams claim road wins in pre-holiday finales

Garden City High School’s girls and boys basketball teams grabbed a pair of road wins on Friday, Dec. 20, at Bear Creek, Colo. to conclude the 2019 portion of their schedule.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

A year earlier, the Garden City High School girls basketball team struggled in a road loss at Bear Creek, Colo. in their final game before the holiday break.

Friday night, Dec. 20, was a different story as the Lady Buffs rolled to a 63-19 triumph over the Lady Bears in another road contest in their final game of 2019.

The victory enabled coach Matt Pfeifer’s team to go into the break with a 3-2 record and they will be idle until they return for a home game on Friday, Jan. 3, 2020. That will be a 6 p.m. tipoff against Junction City.

The Lady Buffs jumped out to an 11-3 lead after one quarter and broke it open with a 17-7 second period to make it 28-10 at intermission. It was extended to 59-17 after three quarters.

Keyhana Turner and Amaya Gallegos led the way for the Lady Buffs with 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Lady Buffs were playing without junior forward Julie Calzonetti, the team’s leading scorer, who was out with an injury sustained in the Scott City game on Dec. 14.

BOYS BASKETBALL

The first two weeks of the 2019-20 basketball season has been something similar to a hospital cardiac care until.

Once again, on Friday, Dec. 20, the Garden City High School boys basketball team survived a closely-contested non-league, inter-state game to prevail, 47-46, over the Bear Creek, Colo., Bears.

The Buffs trailed 36-34 after three quarters but were able to overtake the host Bears with a 13-10 fourth-quarter advantage.

Bear Creek had opened with a 15-10 lead after one quarter and were up 29-28 at halftime and clung to that narrow margin heading to the final eight minutes.

Azavier Williams and Tae Rosales combined for 11 of the team’s final 13 points in the fourth period, with Rosales knocking down a pair of 3-pointers while Williams canned a trey and added a pair of free throws.

Williams led the scoring attack for the Buffs with 16 points and Rosales was close behind with 13. Once again, the Buffs got scoring from a deep bench, with eight players cracking the point column. The Bears saw their season mark slip to 5-4.

During the first two weeks of the season, with five games now in the books, the Buffs are 4-1 and of the six games played, five of them have been decided by six points or less. The Buffs now own a pair of one-point triumphs, another by five and one by 12. Their lone setback, in the season opener at Guymon, Okla., was by six points.

Next up for the Buffs are the holiday break will be a 7:45 p.m. tipoff at home on Friday, Jan. 3, 2020, against Junction City at The Garden.
