WRESTLING
While the No. 3-ranked Garden City Buffaloes boys wrestling team lost a heart-breaking 38-33 dual match to rival Dodge City on Thursday in Dodge City, the Lady Buffs’ wrestlers were dominating their counterparts from Boot Hill in the earlier match of the evening, besting Dodge’s girls, 33-18.

The Lady Buffs, in their first full year as a varsity sport, won six of the nine matches against the Lady Red Demons.
Anahi Cervantes split a pair of matches at 101 pounds, losing by a fall at 2:39 but then coming back to win by fall at 2:26 in her second match.

BUFFS
The highly-anticipated opening dual in the Western Athletic Conference certainly lived up to its billing, as the Class 6A No. 3 and No. 5 teams (Garden City and Dodge City) met in Dodge for the Battle of the Bell.

Thursday’s match opened with the 152-pound division and the Demons opened with a win. As the matches progressed and the points switched back and forth, the Buffs trailed 35-33 with one remaining match at 145 pounds. The Buffs had won four straight matches from Silas Pineda at 120 pounds (fall, 3:32), Ryan Heiman at 126 pounds (7-2 Dec.), Diago Hernandez at 132 pounds (fall, 5:21) and Jacob Holt at 138 pounds (fall, 3:50).
But Erick Dominguez was unable to come up with the winning points in the concluding match, falling 5-0 in a decision to give the Demons a 5-point victory. The Buffs were missing Josh Janas at 152 pounds and Jared Arellano at 160 pounds, both out due to illness.
Alex Rodriguez (170, 3-2 dec.), Matt Smith (220, fall, 3:08) and Trae Torres (106, 10-2 maj. dec.) were the other winners for the Buffs. Of the 14 weight classes, the Buffs won seven of the, lost five by falls, one by a decision and forfeited an open weight at 160.
The Buffs will have a quick turnaround as they head back to Dodge City for the DC Invitational on Saturday. Matches begin at 9 a.m. The event will open in pool play and then go into bracket team duals.
BOYS SWIMMING
