BOYS SOCCER: Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2020
For the 80 minutes of regulation play, the Garden City Buffaloes boys soccer team and Great Bend Panthers had battled to a 0-0 standoff.
With both teams unable to crack the scoring column, the Western Athletic Conference match-up headed into the first 10-minute overtime.
With just 3:26 gone, in the 83rd minute of the match, the Buffaloes’ Leopoldo Hernandez rifled in a shot from the right side just outside the goal area into the lower left net that produced a dramatic 1-0 triumph Tuesday night at Buffalo Stadium.
Hernandez’ unassisted score enabled the Buffs to win their second straight home WAC match during a five-game homestand that will conclude Thursday, Oct. 1, with a 6:30 p.m. pitch at Buffalo Stadium against league-leading and rival Dodge City.
The game-winning shot allowed the Buffs to leave after a frustrating night of missed opportunities, having 18 shots compared to just 8 for the Panthers.
Tuesday’s win also improved the Buffs’ season record to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the WAC.
Great Bend 0 0 0 — 0
Garden City 0 0 1 — 1
