Buffs’ boys soccer ties Bishop Carroll in scoreless 2 OT marathon

BOYS SOCCER: Friday, Oct. 16, 2020

The Garden City High School boys soccer team closed out its regular season schedule on Thursday with a road match at Wichita-Bishop Carroll.

And while the Buffs were unable to score a goal for the fifth straight game, they managed to escape with a 0-0 tie after two, 10-minute overtime periods failed to break the scoreless deadlock.

Thursday’s result left the Buffs with a season mark of 6-7-1 and they will now await the pairings for the Class 6A Region 1 playoffs, which begin the week of Oct. 26. They have been paired with WAC foes Dodge City and Liberal, along with Hutchinson, in the 4-team regional. Teams will be seeded by records and play semifinal games either on Oct. 26 or 27 with the regional title game to be played on Oct. 29 at the highest remaining seeded team.

Thus far, Dodge City remains unbeaten while Liberal has two losses. The Buffs most likely will be seeded third or fourth based upon the outcome of Hutchinson’s final regular-season contests.

In Thursday’s tie, the Buffs had 10 shots on goal while limiting Carroll to just 7. Garden owned possession of the ball for nearly 60 percent of the time, but was unable to score. Angel Guevara and David Zamaripa each had 3 saves in goal for the Buffs. Carroll had 4 keeper saves.

“It was a really good game, and our defense continues to play very well,” head coach Jose Vital said. “We had some good scoring chances, but just were unable to get the ball into the net.”
